Studies show the largest contributor to the carbon footprint (CO₂e) of wine is the glass bottle. On average a bottle of wine has a carbon footprint of 1.28kg CO₂e (that’s more than driving 10kms). And up to 60% of this is solely due to the glass bottle.
Using refillable, reusable packaging substantially reduces a wine’s carbon footprint. Your average single use wine bottle releases 0.69kg of carbon (CO₂e) per litre. Reusing a refillable keg 50 times can reduce this to 0.046kgCO₂e/L.
That is a 93% reduction in the carbon footprint!!
‘But glass bottles are recyclable’ I hear you say...and true recycling glass can reduce its carbon footprint. But a 10% increase in recycled glass content only reduces the carbon footprint by 2%. All glass production (including recycled glass) uses a huge amount of energy and releases significant emissions from the melting process.
We believe recycling is not the answer!
We must minimise and reuse packaging! Every time we reuse a glass bottle or refill a keg we can halve its carbon footprint.
Wine OnTap just makes sense- less waste, lower carbon footprint and fresher better tasting wine.
